14 days after arrival, you need to submit a residency permit to the city office. If staying less than two months or already registered elsewhere in Germany (and your stay does not exceed 6 months) registration is not necessary. More info at official website: http://bit.ly/anmeldungBER
The Anmeldung is also required for most of the administrative things you will have to do here, such as opening a bank account, paying your taxes, etc.
You must go to the Bürgeramt to register, which is the equivalent of the city hall.
Booking an online appointment is the best way to save time during the registration process. It is not mandatory to go to the Bürgeramt of your district. You can choose the most convenient one for you.

On the day of your appointment, you must bring the following documents with you:
- Passport
- Visa (if applicable)
- Registration form
- Landlord form signed
- Marriage and birth certificates translated into German (if you have family members living with you)
