14 days after arrival, you need to submit a residency permit to the city office. If staying less than two month or already registered elsewhere in Germany (and your stay does not exceed 6 months) registration is not necessary. More info at official website: http://bit.ly/anmeldungBER

The Anmeldung is also required for most of the administrative things you will have to do here, such as opening a bank account, paying your taxes, etc.

You must go to the Bürgeramt to register, which is the equivalent of the city hall.

Booking an online appointment is the best way to save time during the registration process. It is not mandatory to go to the Bürgeramt of your district. You can choose the most convenient one for you.

On the day of your appointment, you must bring the following documents with you:

  • Passport
  • Visa (if applicable)
  • Registration form
  • Landlord form signed
  • Marriage and birth certificates translated into German (if you have family members living with you)

We are based in Germany, where data security is of high importance. The passport photo is scanned outside of Facebook Messenger through a webform that processes the information in an external German Server. Then, the server runs an OCR application that reads only the lines of digits below the passport (MRZ – Machine Readable Zone). Once the form is filled out and delivered, the passport photo and data is automatically deleted.
